讲座题目:Brain Neuroscience: Brain-computer interfaces and its applications

讲 座 人:林伯

讲座人简介:Bor-Shyh Lin is currently Associate Professor of the Institute of Imaging and Biomedical Photonics, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, in 1997, M.S. degree and Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University,Taiwan, in 1999 and 2006 respectively. His research interests are in the areas of biomedical system design, biomedical signal processing, and biosensor.

讲座主要内容:Brain computer interface (BCI) is a communication pathway between the brain and external devices. It allows controlling external devices, such as robots, air conditioners, assistant technology devices, and other equipments, without muscles. According to the BCI control mode, BCI systems can be classified into synchronous (cue-paced) and asynchronous (self-paced) modes. For synchronous mode, the onset of mental activity is externally-paced, and EEG signal has to be analyzed in predefined time windows to translate into commands. Many successful synchronous BCI systems have been proposed in previous studies, such as P300-based BCI. Different from synchronous mode, the onset of intended mental task is self-paced, and its corresponding EEG is continuous analyzed in the asynchronous mode. Therefore, asynchronous BCI seems to be more practical for daily applications. The aim of this study is to introduce various kinds of novel techniques for sensing brain activity, and to share our experience in the design of brain computer interface system and its applications.
